The first known mass shooting in the U.S. where students were shot, was on April 9, 1891, when 70 year old, James Foster fired a shotgun at a group of students in the playground of St. Mary’s Parochial School, Newburgh, New York, causing minor injuries to several of the students.

Here’s an example of some of the cockeyed reasons.
February 12, 1909 San Francisco, California 10-year-old Dorothy Malakanoff was shot and killed by 49-year-old Demetri Tereaschinko as she arrived at her school in San Francisco. Tereaschinko then shot himself in a failed suicide attempt. Tereaschinko was reportedly upset that Malakanoff refused to elope with him.
My question is what was he doing talking to a 10 year old to begin with? Ten year olds aren’t mentally equipped to make these kind of decisions! I guess this explain how so many girls in the 1600, 1700, 1800 and early 1900’s were married with two or three children by age 14.

May 18, 1927 Bath, Michigan School treasurer Andrew Kehoe, after killing his wife and destroying his house and farm, blew up the Bath Consolidated School by detonating dynamite in the basement of the school, killing 38 people, mostly children. He then pulled up to the school in his Ford car, then blew the car up, killing himself and four others. Only one shot was fired in order to detonate dynamite in the car. This was deadliest act of mass murder at a school in the United States.

As you can see the shootings and school murders are new according to the http://www..k12academics.com. They’re simply better reported nationally than in the past. In the past, the news of the shooting seemed to remained in the local area.

OMG! I had no idea there had been so many and most of the early ones were some pychco dude shooting the teacher because she wouldn’t marry him. He was abusive that may be a clue as to why she said no.

Neither did I know the magnitude of these crimes and how often they occurred in the past. The information came from an academic organization. But I’m proud of the young people for standing up saying the adults have failed them and is taking matters into their own young hands in a march to change the gun laws.

Back in the turn of the last century it was considered acceptable, if not idea, for a girl age ten to marry a man of fifty. The family often used what her husband brought to the table to support the other numerous siblings. The husband often helped her family survived. I know by any era’s standard this was wrong in so many ways but sometimes extreme hardship made people accepted wrong things.

The White Supremacists are trying to incite another Civil War. Why? Because they feels that America is a white country and no one else has a right to the same privileges they enjoy. The reason people are saying this is that there have been far too many shooting involving minorities. Example: Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Buffalo’s Top, The Walmart shooting in Texas and many attacks on churches and other minority institutions.

Sorry about the double comment, but I’d like to ask if you know how to get more info on James Foster, I’m doing some research on this topic and this seems to be one of the earlier significant incidents that wasn’t part of a personal dispute or accident and I cannot find any motives or accounts for him.

Luke, it’s hard to find anything on this incident. I don’t understand why since it was the first national recorded school shooting. But not the first one to happen.
For a start in finding information, I would suggest researching the local library or asking the police department about the old police report if applicable. But I did find a footnote on him. It’s said the children poked fun at the man during their recess and some day he simply walked to the edge of the school yard and started shooting. I was curious as to why he didn’t he just stay indoors when the children were out of class for recess. Other than that. I haven’t found much on him. I haven’t been to the local library. I bet they probably has more on a microfilm or some places call them mirco-reel of an old newspaper article.
