Michael and Janet Jackson’s father, dead at 89. There has been many controversial things said and even published about the man. Some say he was abusive to his children. Forcing them to practice and practice when it wasn’t wise to do so. I do not know and has never denied anyone’s claims of abusive incidents for I wasn’t there. I do hope if his children suffered abuse at his hands, he and them all made amends. That’s the only way for healing to begin.
But I do know there would’ve never been the Jackson Five, Michael Jackson nor Janet Jackson as we knew them had them had not been for their parents pushing them. Joe Jackson engineered the careers of The Jackson 5 and then both the solo careers of Michael and Janet Jackson. Despite his faults none of them would be the idols they are today were not for his savvy business sense.
However, no one can deny the truly herculean task he accomplished coming out of Fountain Hill, AR at the onset of the Great Depression and helping his children rise to unprecedented greatest in an industry that usual took advantage of African American performers.
If you read the story of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Leopold Mozart it sounds a lot like Joe and Michael Jackson. Like Leopold Mozart, Joseph Jackson was a musician in his own right. He pushed his children like Leopold did Mozart to a status he, himself never reached. He pushed him into history.
