Latin is the basic structure of the English Language.

Prior 1966 Latin was taught in American schools because it is the basic structure or formation of the English Language. Before Roman occupation, the original Saxon language was not Latin nor English as we know it today. The early Saxon system of writing had no vowels. All the Romance languages started from Vulgar Latin (In the Latin Language, “vulgar” is the word meaning “common,” so “Vulgar Latin” means “Common Latin”). The widely spoken of Romance languages are English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian, and Catalan. They are called “romance languages” because they all originate from a language spoken by the ancient Romans mixed with the native language of the area.

When used to work as a librarian I once found these poems written in children textbooks in the old section of library’s Latin books. The first version of the poem was written in 1912 by a student of Latin.

Latin is a language,
Dead as Dead Can Be,
First it Killed the Romans,
Now It’s Killing Me.

All are dead who spoke it.
All are dead who wrote it.
All are dead who learned it,
Lucky dead, they’ve earned it.

I found another version written in 1926

Latin is a language,
Dead as It Can Be,
It Killed the Ancient Romans,
And Now It’s Killing Me.

Dead are all who spoke it.
Dead are all who wrote it.
Dead are all who learned it,
If  you learn it. Dead will you be too.

(laughing) This shows children have always looked for ways to get out of lessons and homework. Children nowadays say they don’t have any or the dog ate it. At least, they stopped avowing it will kill them.

Of course, this isn’t true! Despite the children’ claims in these verse, Latin has never killed anyone. Not even the ancient Romans. Those who spoke it killed a lot of people. But the language itself, never killed anyone. It’s being used today. Especially in the medical field. There are living people who actually speak and write ancient Latin. Actually, to understand many classic works it would be a good ideal to learn a little Latin.

About unholypursuit

A. White, an award winning former librarian, who is also a long time member of Romantic Time and Publisher's Weekly. A. White has been writing for over fifteen years. She took classes in creative writing in college, specializing in ancient myths and legends. and later at a local community center while living in Chicago. In college she won the national contest to verbally list every country in the world, it's capital and ingenious language. Her works are mainly horror, fantasy, extreme, and sci-fi as well as, as some may says, "the truly strange predicament and puzzling." Books that I've written are "Clash with the Immortals, and eleven others which are part of the "Unholy Pursuit saga,". She has been working on the Chronicles since 2007. She wished to complete them all before introducing them to public so the readers wouldn't have to for the continuation to be written. The ideas of the book come from classic literature such as whose work greatly influence the world world such as Homer, Sophocles, Herodotus, Euripides, Socrates, Hippocrates, Aristophanes, Plato, Aristotle and many more. The "Book of Enoch" influenced the usage of Azazael as a main character and love interest. I created the primary main character from the Chronicle of Saints. I wanted to show them as real flesh and blood with thoughts, desires and yearning as any human. Not as they are so often depicted. So I created one of my own to show her as a real human that everyone can relate to.

Perhaps Latin has killed, if it is used in the medical field, a mistake in the Latin writing….

    • Thanks Tim, I never thought about that. Yes, it’s still used in the medical community. Most prescriptions was once written in Latin. A mistake written in any language could kill if a wrong prognosis and diagnosis is given.

Latin is still considered the language of the elite and royalty. Learning Latin is still important for it helps one to learn and speak other Romance languages. Making it easier to learn them. Modern Italian is not Latin. Many believe it is. Romanian and Sardinian is the closest language to ancient Latin according to many linguistic professors. Sardinian is spoken in Sardinia, an Italian island in the Mediterranean Sea. Many people who speak English doesn’t know they are already speaking a form of Latin. English is one of the closest to vulgar Latin in grammar and pronunciation.
