After the re-election of George W. Bush in 2004, Toni Morrison wrote:
This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear. We speak, we write, we do language. That is how civilizations heal.
The artists include the authors, too. Authors are artists. I know it’s difficult to write some things and it can be suicidal to your writing career and even your life to write about certain topics.
But I feel it’s our duty as a writer to bring these issue to the surface. Why so? Because we know about things which happen long ago because some brave soul had the courage to write about it. Writing is our gift to future generations.
