In my state plastic shopping bags are a thing of the past.
On March 1st, 2020, New York State’s law banning single-use plastic carryout bags took effect. In New York City, businesses are required to collect a 5-cent fee on paper carryout bags from customers, with some exceptions. The City does not set prices for reusable bags.
A new bag waste reduction law took effect in New York State – where over 23 billion plastic bags are typically used each year. Plastic bag usage affects both our communities and environment. Plastic bags can be seen stuck in trees, as litter in our neighborhoods, and floating in our waterways.
From the significant recycling and disposal issues they pose to the harm they can do to wildlife, the negative impacts of plastic bags are easily seen.
I say it’s a good thing. In my area we have lots of sea gulls who often get tangled in these bags and other plastic items. Especially beer can rings.
