I have seen versions where its written ‘sent to me‘ not ‘gave to me‘ sorry but the song was written in 1780 long before the days of being able to sent your true love a gift a daily day if you didn’t live in the same household.
The reason I wrote close enough in the title is that some of the original words are not very nice by any standard.
There have been later changes from ladies a-waiting to ladies dancing.
The index calculates the cost of all the gifts in the song based on current market rates; 2019’s total comes to a hefty $41,094.93, or $180,609.46 if you count each mention of an item over and over separately which would amount to 364 gifts in all — up 1.2 percent from the price last year. ✨
