The Fatal Police Beating of Tyre Nichols
I don’t know about anyone else, but I believe I speak for millions. I’m so very weary of seeing these cases of senseless cases of brutality; killings as if life means nothing. Weary of seeing and mourning with another family crying over the senseless loss of a loved one.
First police report in Tyre Nichols’ case does not match video of deadly beating.
And I’m more exhausted in seeing no changes ever occurring. It’s like there’s no end to this living nightmare.
Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was beaten by Memphis police officers for roughly three minutes on the evening of Jan. 7, after he was stopped for what the police initially said was reckless driving. The stop escalated into a violent confrontation of the Tyre Nichols being chased down the streets and ended with Mr. Nichols hospitalized in critical condition. He died three days later.
One officer was ramming him in the back with the baton, using the same technique used when breaking down a door. A human back isn’t a door.
It’s getting worse and worse.
As a history major, I took the time to look back on history and analyzed the frequency of these crimes. And found they’re far worst today than in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. You’ll have to go back to the era of open lynchings to find this level of plain brutality and the public turning a blind eye.
What we’re seeing today is a lot like serfdom in Europe and slavery in America. Where the magistrates were given power by the king, dukes, lords, earls, counts, or marquises to be judge and executioner of the lower class. They had the power to drag someone out of their home and execute them on the spot. Usually a hanging took place at the nearest tree. Open roadside hangings were the norm of the day.
This same practice was brought to America during the colonial era and conducted during and after slavery.
The America police system grew out of the magistrate system of Europe and the slave patrol system. With these two systematic mentalities bases solely on class and race as its parents…I see where the brutality comes from.
This way of thinking is why we have a society ran by lawyers, cops, and thugs. It only vaguely resembles a democracy.

The police beating of Nichols prompted shock, sadness and outrage from the public, state and national elected officials and community members, with President Biden calling it “yet another painful reminder of the profound fear and trauma, the pain, and the exhaustion that Black and Brown Americans experience every single day.”

Don’t think you have your history facts right.

Do you care to enlighten me of which history facts I have wrong? No one can deny that the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols and thousands of other black bodies is not historically accurate. It’s been going on since the 7th century, starting with the Trans-Saharan slave trade.
A slave trade predating the Trans-Atlantic trade which began in 1411. During the Trans-Saharan slave trade, slaves were transported across the Sahara desert. Most were stolen from Sub-Saharan Africa to North Africa to be sold to Mediterranean, Asian, and Middle Eastern civilizations.
If you are talking about the medieval Reeves or Reese, (another name for a constable or magistrate) then I know the information is correct.
Yes, I’m aware it is now written that the common people elected the magistrate. That’s a revisionist fable. The constable, Reeve, Magistrate or whatever you prefer to call them was appointed that position because of his birth rank, (A relative of the nobles.) not by the serf’s elections. Serfs and peasants weren’t allowed to elect anyone for anything.

And just who do you think became cops and lawyers in this country? You have to have connections and money to become either.
After the Civil War in the North and the South, former Confederate soldiers who were once slave patrols and Confederate sympathizers were often hired as police due to their connections and experience. Things like the Memphis Massacre, Red Summer, the burning of Greenwood and hundreds if not thousands of other incidents clearly tell any historian the mindset of the police at that time. It doesn’t take a genius to see their way of thinking.
I see you’re writing without having done research on who is who and how they got the position they have or had.

Our lawyers, police, judges and legal system developed out of English Common law. Well before the Normans and Romans arrived in England. And well before there was any slave trade. You are taking a very narrow slice of history snd blowing it up well out of proportion.

Hi, I’m the monitor of this blog for the day and I think that rant me the power to comment on some posts.
I went and read the full conversation. Unless you’re willing to study like Louis Fates I suggest don’t get into a history debate with Alma. Alma is a historian. Studied it. I mean studied this stuff in a far greater depths than the average person. But I’m not too shabby myself. Her explanation is correct. The English Common Law for centuries didn’t apply to the peasants. Serfdom didn’t end until World War I.
How could it have grown out of the English Common law when there was none predating Rome. The Normans simply continued what Rome started. The English society as we know it didn’t exist before the Romans.
The Roman city Londinium became the center for what became the Roman colony of Britain. The name England was still a long way from becoming into existence. The Brits were a tribe on the southern coast of the Isle who the Romans encountered first. They named the whole place Britannia. There were many different tribal systems before the Romans arrived. We don’t know a lot about them because Rome wiped them out.
But back to the ancestor of our law enforcement system. Sorry, but Alma is right. Going all the way to Colonial America, the lot they were selected from were originally or former slave catchers, slave patrols and many were plantation overseers. She didn’t blow anything out of proportion. You’re a white guy who doesn’t want to admit the truth.

All I need to know is our present situation is killing unarmed Black people by a sizable number and for no justifiable reason. America was founded by the same racist people having problems with Megan Markle marrying one of their princes. These are the same people whose system America is based upon. Of course, you don’t see the problem with because it is not biting you in the butt.
How many friends or people you know have been gunned down the police. Or died a mysterious death making no sense? So of course you’re going to defend a system that keeps the masses in their place. Isn’t that what the slave patrols did?

To say that all police came from slave patrols, and that all police, judges, and lawyers are thugs is not only wrong but irresponsible. That type of speech just gets us nowhere and offers no solutions. So far nothing constructive has appeared on this post. Talking about a problem without offering a way to fix it is of no help.

Try telling those who lost a loved one that what I said isn’t true. Tell them that these thugs care about them and their pain. Tell them that anyone who call these people thugs are irresponsible. Which one are you? A lawyer or a cop. Only someone directly involved in this legal quagmire feels this way.
I know you didn’t just say “offer solutions”!? When black lives are lost daily due to systematic racism.
People has been screaming solutions since 1619 and no one listened. This so like something a KKK member always say when someone call them up on their racist views and opinions.
I’m quoting one of Alma’s characters: “It doesn’t matter how powerful your opinions are if you do not use the power of your opinions for positive changes, then you’re indeed part of the problem.”
There’s a lot constructive on this post if you take your nose out of the racist kettle and look around at what’s going on.
This very attitude is why we are reversing backward instead of moving forward. Nothing can be resolved until we as a society admit there’s a problem. You can’t fix a problem if you don’t admit exist. If your roof is leaking you don’t stand there and look at it. You admit it’s raining all over your place and the first clear day you get up there and fix it. But if someone fix it and you keep going up there ripping off the tile then don’t be surprise when birds crap on your furniture.
Defending these events are the birds crapping all over everyone’s life after people have fixed it again and again.
Those men who beat Tyre Nichols to death are thugs and there’s no other name for them. Those who stood by and watched are equally guilty. Tyre cried out in anguish but the Memphis Officers kept hitting and kicking him. Why would anyone ram a baton into someone’s back and head like that if they had no intentions of killing them. These police depts refuse to address the stinking quagmire they call a police force. They keep them on the force knowing they are a menace to the public.
I never said every single judge, cop, or lawyer was dirty. But they know about the dirty ones and say and do nothing about them.
There’s a Hierarchy that’s still in place today. It’s the same old system dating back to the old patrols of the 1600’s, 1700’s and 1800’s. It all came from the American slave patrols, this is where most of the cops, judges and lawyers come out of. That’s why their mentality toward black people are the same as it was then. No one could need laws to regulate common human decency.

I never defended any of these events, and I did not say the men who beat Nichols were not thugs. You are putting words and meaning into my comment that are not there. Your saying that most of the cops, lawyers, and judges came out of the slave patrols is inaccurate and irresponsible. That statement is based on emotion and not based on facts or history.

When has anything being accurate and proven facts had much weigh on anything when it came to real history?
Black people are bursting the seams of jails and prisons based solely on inaccurate information or no evident and inaccurate and irresponsible behavior. Some are in their graves.
And apparently you think the freed people were so dumb they couldn’t remember Sheriff Billy Bob was once Plantation Overseer Billy Bob who lashed their relative or friend to death. And his posse,deputies, were once junior overseers under him. People don’t forget something like that.
Emotions haven’t a thing to do with any of the things that Black people face every day and then people like tell them it is all emotional. That within itself was racist and dismissal.
Try living centuries of racial discrimination and then come back and tell me how telling the truth about certain people who abuse their power to destroy lives is inaccurate and irresponsible.

Billy Bob and his associates died 150 years ago. Their descendants, if any, are unknown. Talk to me about what is going on now and what you want done about it or changed.

I think the state need to compensate these people’s descendants for helping in taking these people’s land.
According to Black Americans in Georgia, Oscarville was a lot like Greenwood. Georgia’s Black Wall Street. It happened nine years before Greenwoood.
It was a thriving Black community full of carpenters, blacksmiths, and bricklayers, teachers, and it own doctor. And with farming as the top trade. They had a miraculous farming growth there while the rest of the state was really still struggling from the aftermath of Sherman’s March To The Sea. Others wanted their land. They refused to give it to them. The whites invented some story about a Black man rapping a white woman to get surrounding communities support.
n Forsyth County, Georgia, in September 1912, two separate alleged attacks on white women in the Cumming area resulted in black men being accused as suspects. First, a white woman reportedly awoke to find a black man in her bedroom; then days later, a teenage white woman was beaten and raped, later dying of her injuries.
Following the first alleged assault, a black preacher who made disparaging remarks about the victim was harshly beaten. Local law enforcement locked the preacher inside the courthouse overnight to protect him from the mob waiting outside. Other black men, arrested in connection with the alleged assault, were moved to Atlanta for their safety. A grand jury dropped the case months later.
Following the second alleged assault, a 16-year-old black boy was linked to the attack by a pocket mirror sold to him at a local store. He confessed, under duress, and implicated accomplices. Rob Edwards was one of the men arrested and held in the small jail in Cumming. He was taken from the jail by a white mob and shot and beaten to death, and his body was hanged from a telephone pole. The 16-year-old and an alleged accomplice were later convicted by an all-white jury and sentenced to death by hanging, which was carried out weeks later in what became a public execution.
In the following months, a group of men called “Night Riders”[a] terrorized black citizens, warning them to leave in 24 hours or be killed. Those who resisted were subjected to further harassment, including shots fired into their homes, some were killed and their livestock killed. An estimated 98% of the black residents of Forsyth County left upon hearing the night riders warnings of what was intended for them. Most of the African Africans left days before the white mob arrived.
Out of fear for their lives the owners of these properties never went back. It’s said a few went back and tried to reclaim their personal effects like farming tools, and other items, but either driven off again or disappeared. Whites took over Oscarville in 1912 years before Lake Sidney Lanier was built.
Parts of the stolen land would be sold to the U.S. government, “and by 1950 a plan to build Lake Lanier was in full effect. Soon the entire town of Oscarville would be underwater, intentionally flooded in conjunction with the Buford Dam to support the growing demand for a water supply to the nearby cities.” But this happened long before the 1950’s. These people left to avoid being killed.

This area, publicly executed a sixteen year old child. How is that for not being racist as hell?
We all know it was some unnamed White man who killed that girl and woman. That accusation is as old as racist in America. Whenever the planters killed their wives or a rich man rapped a white woman it was always blamed on the slave. That who paid for her death.

My heart breaks with each of these murders. My civic college professor said the same thing about the history of the courts and policing system in America. That it grew out of serfdom and slavery. That many of the former plantations’ overseers and slave catchers were hired as sheriffs, US Marshals, and police after the Civil War, many of them incited riots and attacked against the newly freed African Americans.
If you’re willing to look at it for what it is. Systematic racism which grew out of slavery, then it all makes sense.
